Abstract

This study aims to explore the importance of clothes fashion designing competency so that graduates can find a niche in fashion career. This qualitative study employed focus group interview approach on two groups of teaching staff comprising 16 people. All respondents taught in the field of Clothes Fashion Designing in public and private Institute of Skills Training in Malaysia.  Majority of the respondents agreed that the most important competency was skills in making clothes and knowledge in designing.  Respondents from private training institutes stated that although knowledge competency aspect was important, they gave priority to skills competency considering the teaching and learning style in Skills Training Institutes is aligned to Competency Based Training (CBT). Respondents also discussed several obstacles and problems which prevented them from applying parts of competency crucially required in fashion field. The problems mentioned were caused by frequent change in programmes, and the short time given for completing assignments.  This is compounded by negative attitude of students such as lack of interest, no efforts, and unclear about career direction after completion of training.  Hence, it is appropriate that authorities involved in policy making or designing curriculum carried out comprehensive studies on any programmes in progress before making changes. This is to enable observation and exploration of problems encountered throughout the implementation of a programme. It is hoped that quality graduates of Technical Vocational Education Training will be produced, with marketability, and ability to become successful entrepreneurs who eventually form the backbone of the country’s economic development.
