Abstract

The study was carried out to determine whether the five dimensions of emotional intelligence which were self awareness, control of emotions, self motivation, empathy, and interpersonal skills contributed to student academic achievement. Research subjects were form four students (N=370) of which 127 were male (34.32%) and 243 were female students (65.68%). The subjects were also categorised into three main ethnic groups which were Malay (50%), Chinese (42.16%) and Indian (7.84%). The study used stratified random sampling technique based on population characteristics and a set of questionnaires as the research instrument. Data analysis indicated that there was significant variance for factors (self awareness, self motivation and empathy) on student academic achievement. In short, excellent academic achievement is the target and main goal of each student regardless of  their ethnic grouping.
