Abstract

This paper discusses the translation Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI) in English to Bahasa  Melayu  and see the validity and reliability. Career Thought Inventory (CTI; Sampson, et al, 1996a) consists of 48 items designed to  measure the  dysfunctional  career thinking. CTI provides details of the total score and three sub scales of  Decision Making Confusion  (DMC), Commitment Anxiety (CA), and the External Conflict  (EC). CTI using a likert scale with responses from; strongly disagree: (0); strongly agree : (3) and total scores range from 0 to 144, with higher scores indicating more thought is dysfunctional. CTI can be administered from  7 to 15 minutes and can observe the results in the next 5 to 10 minutes. The process of translation into English using back translation methods proposed by Brislin, Lonner and Thondike (1973). The items in  CTI was translated by cultural and local values by a panel of National Translation Institute, a  lecturer at  Institute Bahasa,  two English teachers, one Bahasa Melayu teacher and   two school counselors. For face and content validity of the questionnaire,  10 lecturers in the field and 6 school counselors  were involved. Face and content validity values obtained are a minimum of 0.731 and a maximum value of 0.925. The value of the  CTI are  .927 for the construct  Decision Making Confusion (DCM),  .788  for the construct Commitment Anxiety (CA) and  .803  for the constructs External Conflicts (EC).  After the questionnaire  modified based on the recommendations of experts,  a pilot study of the questionnaire to 40 students in secondary schools were conducted. The reliability of the  CTI questionnaire   for the decision making confusion sub-scale  is .875, anxiety commitment sub-scale is .801  and external conflict sub-scale is  .758. Overall reliability of CTI obtained was .903. This proves that this study has been successfully translated  CTI into Bahasa Melayu   and  obtain a high validity and reliability.
