Abstract

The government’s vision to increase the utilization of local components in automobile industry especially PROTON has resulted in increasing importance of the transport equipments industry. However, the emergence of many trade blocks like ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) has increased competition for this industry especially in the global context. To overcome this challenge, the transport equipments industry must be more effective and productive in order to reduce cost of production. In this regards, aspects of technical efficiency change, technological change and total factor productivity (TFP) growth become relevant. This article has two main objectives; firstly, to analyze the technical efficiency change, technological change and TFP growth and secondly, to examine the contribution of technological change to the transport equipments output growth. The analysis of this article will based on the Industrial Manufacturing Survey Data from 1984 to 2003 gathered from the Department of Statistics, Malaysia. There are seven types of transport equipments sub–industries at the five digits of Malaysian Standard Industrial Classification (MSIC). In obtaining the technical efficiency change, technological change and TFP growth, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) were used. The technological change is then incorporated into the output growth function for every transport equipments sub–industry together with other inputs such as the capital and labor. The results indicate negative growth in the technological change for most transport equipments sub–industries. In most sub–industries the contribution of technical efficiency change to the TFP growth is higher than the contribution of technological change. The technological change is only a significant determinant of output growth for several transport equipments sub–industries.
