Abstract

Assimilation and dissimilation are two language phenomenon which occur in the process of articulation. It is explicitly seen when a speaker tries to moderate pronunciation of letters in an effort to speak smoothly and fluently. Both assimilation and dissimilation involve phonetics and phonology. Assimilation in Arabic language is very closely related to the ‘idgham’ rules, which are used in reciting the al–Qur’an al–Karim. As such, most examples of assimilation are found in the Holy al–Qur’an al–Karim. It is also noted that the ratio of occurrence of assimilation is very much higher compared to dissimilation. Hence, dissimilation could be considered as negligible in Arabic language.
