Abstract

Hysteria is one of the time problems faced by society since time immemorial. Various questions arise in discussions on hysteria, such as whether it is solely a psychological problem or one that involves the influence of mystical and supernatural beings. An affected individual usually loses some of his bodily functions causing the victim disability in self-control. This symptom must be curbed from spreading and disturbing the tranquility of human life. Hence this research is conducted to identify the factors stemming from human spirituality and to analyze the spiritual approach which can be implemented by hysteria victims to overcome this disturbance. The said method is then analyzed from an Islamic perspective. This research adopts a survey method which combines two approaches to obtain data, a quantitative method comprising of a questionnaire and a qualitative method which involves face to face interview. There are 117 respondents for the quantitative method while the qualitative method involves 12 students, a teacher, an Islamic treatment practitioner and a psychiatrist. Research results find that the spiritual aspect is one of the causative factors of hysteria. This research also finds that hysteria victims involved in this research implement spiritual practice to prevent the recurrence of hysteria in their lives.
